Hawks Top Renegades 10-1 to Take Series Lead

FREMONT (5-5) – The Hawks, the #14 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball Championships for the Northern California Region, traveled to Fremont to take on the #3 seeded Ohlone College Renegades. The Hawks scored nine runs in three combined innings and defeated the Renegades 10-1 to take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.  

The Hawks finished fourth in the Big 8 Conference with a 24-15 overall record while the Renegades finished a 36-4 overall record and won the Coast Conference-Pacific Division.

The pitching matchup was between the Hawks' Joshua Congress and the Renegades' Carlos Jimenez. The first three innings were scoreless as the two teams, who had not played each other this season, settled into their respective playoff modes. The Hawks would start their scoring in the top of the fourth as Brooks Day hit a home run to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Hawks would score three runs in the top of the sixth; one on a Peyton Wheatley double that scored Jordan Yu, one on a wild pitch that scored Alameida and one on a Francisco Prado single that scored Wheatley. The Hawks led 4-0 at the end of six innings. In the top of the seventh, the Hawks would add two more; one on a Day triple that scored Brian Morley and one on a Yu single that scored Day. The Hawks led 6-0 after seven innings. In the top of the eighth, the Hawks would score four runs; one on a Brett Bloomfield single that scored Prado, two on a Morley triple that scored Bloomfield and Trevor Ray and one on a Billy Rockefeller ground out to the shortstop that scored Morley. The Renegades would get one back in the bottom of the eighth on a Thaddeus Phillips single that scored Jacob Alvarado. The Hawks led 10-1 after eight innings.

Congress got the win for the Hawks and Jimenez got the loss for the Renegades. Congress allowed one hit while striking out eleven. For the Hawks, Day went 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Yu also went 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Prado went 3-5 with one RBI and one run scored. For the Renegades, Ryan Probst went 1-2. Both Alvarado and Phillips went 1-3. Phillips added a RBI and Alvarado had a run scored.

The series between the Hawks and the Renegades will conclude tomorrow in Fremont. Game two of the three game series will start at 11 am and if a third game is necessary, that game will begin thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
