JAYCOB VELASCO SIGNS ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP WITH UNIVERSITY OF MARY (ND)

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  Jaycob Velasco signed a full NCAA Division 2 athletic scholarship to play basketball next season at the University of Mary.  The University of Mary is in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Bismarck, North Dakota.  Jaycob has attended Cosumnes River College for a total of three years and has been an outstanding student athlete for the basketball team.

Velasco was born and raised in Chico California and attended Pleasant Valley High School.  In high school he was a two sport athlete and lettered 3 times in basketball at the center position, as well as lettered 2 times playing tight end in football.  After graduating in 2010, he attended Butte College in Oroville, California to play basketball. However he redshirted and did not see the court his first season.  The next season he transferred to Cosumnes River College to play basketball.  

In Velasco's redshirt freshman year he started in the 27 games that he played in, and would average 12.6 points a game, as well as averaging 7.3 rebounds a game.  He would also go on to lead the team in rebounds with 197 total, finish 2nd in the team in scoring with a total of 341 points, and 4th in the team in 3 pointers made at 28%.  Six times throughout the season, Velasco would score 20 or more points, and bring down 10 or more rebounds, finishing the season with six double doubles.  Jaycob finished his redshirt freshman year being All Big 8 Conference Honorable Mention.  

Velasco started all of his 32 game appearances for the Hawks his sophomore year, and led them to a 23-9 record overall and to the Northern California Regional Semifinal.  His sophomore year he would average 16.1 points a game, shooting 52.7% from the field.  From the 3-point line he would average 39.7% a game, making a total of 50 of them on the season.  From the free throw line he would shoot 82.0% on the season, going 50-61.  From down low, he would average 9.5 rebounds a game, bringing down a total of 303 on the season.  Velasco finished his sophomore season receiving 1st Team All Big 8 Conference Honors.  

Jaycob is the son of Rebecca, and he has two siblings, Katie and Thomas.  Velasco will continue to major in kinesiology at the University of Mary, and aspires to one day become an athletic trainer.
