CRC INVITATIONAL BEGINS TODAY

SACRAMENTO, Calif.- The Cosumnes River women's basketball team, fresh off taking the consolation championship at the Jocelyn Mancebo Classic at San Joaquin Delta College, will make their home debut later tonight when they host Feather River College.  The matchup takes place in the opening round of the CRC Invitational, which runs through Saturday at Cosumnes River College.

The double-elimination tournament begins today at 1 PM when Big 8 rival American River College takes on Shasta College.  The winner from that matchup will move on to take on the winner of Hartnell-Grossmont, which is scheduled for a 3 PM tip-off.  On the opposite side of the bracket, Chabot will take on Redwoods at 5 PM, with the winner to advance to take on the winner of host CRC vs. Feather River.  Tip-off for the Hawks home opener is scheduled for 7 PM.  Cosumnes River enters the tournament with a two game winning streak, following their consolation championship at the Jocelyn Mancebo Classic this past weekend.

The Hawks capped off a quality weekend of play with a 69-49 win over the MPC Lobos in the consolation championship game.  Sophomore forward Janie Myles stuffed the stat sheet in the finale with her second double-double of the tournament, scoring 22 points while grabbing 16 rebounds and dishing out five assists.  Myles also had four steals and a block in a dominant performance inside.  Sophomore combo guard Jade Sowell-Hundon rounded out a standout weekend as well in the win, scoring 18 points while also snagging three steals for the Hawks.  The victory was the team's second straight, following their second round blowout of the College of the Redwoods in a consolation bracket contest.

Sowell-Hundon exploded offensively for CRC, scoring 33 points on 11-15 shooting, including 2-5 from deep, and hitting 9-10 from the charity stripe in the win.  She also contributed three rebounds while dishing out five assists on the afternoon, as the Hawks led this one from the opening tip.  Myles posted the first of her two double-doubles in this contest, with a dominant 22 point-11 rebound performance.  Freshman post Jayla Henderson also scored in double-digits, contributing 11 points and six rebounds to the Hawks cause in the win.  The victory followed CRC's opening round loss to eventual tournament runner-up College of the Sequoias.  Sowell-Hundon got her 2013-14 season off to a big start, scoring 29 points in the opener.  She currently leads all Hawks in scoring with 26.7 points per contest.

The tournament runs through Saturday, when the championship game will take place at 3 PM.  Tickets are $6 for general admission, $4 for seniors, and $2 for children.  Admission is always free for CRC students, staff and faculty.  Concessions will be available to purchase at the event.
