Gladiators Spear Hawks

SACRAMENTO (11-14) - Cosumnes River finished up their home portion of their 2017-18 non-conference schedule as they took on Chabot College. The Hawks were held to a 21.2% shooting percentage and fell 84-55.

In their last game, the Hawks lost 62-59, in overtime, to West Hills College of Lemoore on Friday in Sacramento while the Gladiators earned a forfeit win over Mission College originally scheduled for Friday.

In the first quarter, the Hawks would gain their largest lead of the ballgame, at two, on three occasions; the third occasion at 6-4 after a pair of Brookelyn Larkin free throws. The Gladiators would gain the lead for good at 7-6 on a Sierra Hillman free throw with 6:53 left in the quarter. The Gladiators would take a double-digit lead, at 16-6, on an Olivia Vezeladenos three pointer with 4:48 left in the quarter. The Gladiators would gain their largest lead of the quarter at fourteen, at 25-11, on a Mia Finnie layup with 2:06 left. The Gladiators would have a 25-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Gladiators would continue to extend their lead. The closest the Hawks would come would be ten, at 25-15, after a pair of Jenna Elston free throws. The Gladiators would take their largest lead of the quarter at twenty-eight, at 50-22, on a Vezeladenos layup with 5:14 left in the half. The Gladiators led 52-34 at the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter, the Gladiators would hold the Hawks at arms' length. The closest the Hawks would come would be fifteen, at 55-40, on a Elston layup with 5:52 left in the quarter. The Gladiators would gain their largest lead at twenty-three, at 67-44, on a Kim Masulit three pointer with twenty-five seconds left. The Gladiators would lead 67-44 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Gladiators extended their lead yet again. The closest the Hawks would come would be twenty-one, at 69-48, on a Larkin layup with 8:29 left. The Gladiators would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at thirty-one, at 84-53 on a Hillman jumper with thirty-four seconds left. The loss marked the Hawks' third in a row.

Elston, off the bench, and Larkin had fourteen points apiece to lead the Hawks. Masulit had a game high twenty-four points for the Gladiators. Trina Shaner had eleven and Marya Reynolds had nine in the loss. Vezeladenos, off the bench, had eighteen points, Hillman had sixteen points and Ferrynn Steen, off the bench, had ten points.

The Hawks shot 21% (17-81) from the field, 7.1% (1-14) from the three-point line and were 60.6% (20-33) from the free throw line. The Gladiators shot 44.3% (35-79) from the field, 39.1% (9-23) from the three-point line and 45.5% (5-11) from the foul line. Cosumnes River's defense forced thirty Gladiator turnovers scoring sixteen points off the turnovers while the Gladiators' defense forced twenty-five turnovers by Cosumnes River scoring thirty-three points off the turnovers. Cosumnes River outrebounded Chabot 58-57 and the Gladiators had sixteen more points in the paint (40-24) than did the Hawks.

The Hawks will play their next eight games away from Clark Court. The next game for the Hawks is November 30th as they take on Bakersfield College in their first game of the Santa Ana Classic in Santa Ana. Game time is set for 2 pm.
