VILMA GONZALEZ NAMED CRC STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK ONCE AGAIN

SACRAMENTO, Calif.- Vilma Gonzalez (Rio Americano HS/Sacramento) from the Cosumnes River women’s soccer team has been named CRC’s Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of September 15-21.

Gonzalez scored the team’s lone goal as the Hawks played Evergreen Valley College on the road to a 1-1 draw to conclude the team’s outstanding nonconference campaign.  The Hawks concluded their nonconference schedule with a 3-1-2 overall record, including victories over nationally-ranked opponents.

Gonzalez was named CRC’s Student-Athlete of the Week last week, when she helped lead the Hawks to a victory over visiting Butte College, a 4-2 win at home.  She scored two goals in the contest despite only seeing action in the first half, to pace the CRC offensive attack.  Gonzalez was also the only Hawk player to score a goal in the team’s narrow 2-1 loss to defending state champion Cerritos the week before.

The sophomore forward from Rio Americano currently leads the team in goals with four, as well as overall points with eight.  Her .308 shooting percentage is good for third on the team, and Gonzalez has also started every match for the Hawks at forward.  The Hawks are currently ranked 17th in the latest CCCAA rankings.

This is Vilma Gonzalez’s second CRC Student-Athlete of the Week honor, as well as the third for the women’s soccer team.  Freshman goalkeeper Anna Brown received the honor in August.  CRC returns to play this week when they open Big 8 conference play on the road at Santa Rosa (Sept. 24).  The team’s conference home opener will take place later this week, when they play host to the Pirates of Modesto JC (Sept. 27).
