Hawks Draw with Vikings To Open Conference Play

PLEASANT HILL (9-12) - Cosumnes River started Big 8 Conference play this afternoon as they took on Diablo Valley College. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw. 

In their last match, the Hawks lost 4-0 to Cerritos College in Sacramento on Sunday while the Vikings won 9-0 over Cabrillo College in Pleasant Hill on Friday.

In the first half, Diablo Valley got on the scoreboard first. Vanessa Ruvalcaba scored to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Alexis Brown had the only shot of the half for the Hawks but her shot was saved by Vikings' goalie Danielle Davis. The Vikings would lead 1-0 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Hawks would tie the match early. Alex Torres would score with 40:52 left to tie the match at 1-1. The Vikings would keep the offensive pressure up and had seven shots on goal in the half. All seven were saved by Hawks' goalie Shelby Hand.

Four players (Gabriella Bernard, Brown, Amanda Lopez and Torres) had one shot apiece to lead the Hawks and Ruvalcaba had a match high five shots to lead the Vikings. Hand and Davis both were credited with ties on the afternoon. Diablo Valley outshot Cosumnes River 11-4 and the Vikings had eleven more corner kicks (11-0) than did Cosumnes River.

The Hawks will have their next match on Friday as they will continue Big 8 Conference play as they take on Santa Rosa Junior College in Sacramento. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm.
