Pirates Plunder Win from Hawks

MODESTO (9-26) - Cosumnes River traveled down Highway 99 for their Big 8 Conference match with Modesto Junior College. The Pirates scored two goals in the second half and won 2-1.

Both teams lost their last match. The Hawks lost 2-0 to Folsom Lake College on Friday in Sacramento while the Pirates lost 2-1 to San Joaquin Delta College on Friday in Modesto.

In the first half, the two teams played a back and forth match. With 9:32 left in the half, Cosumnes River would get on the scoreboard as Analissa Lopez scored after a pass from Brianna Heilman to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Analissa Lopez had the final shot of the half for the Hawks but her shot was saved by Pirates' goalie Melissa Ibarra. The Hawks led 1-0 at the halftime intermission.

In the second half, the Pirates would tie the match early in the half. Just two minutes and forty seconds into the half, Jackie Valeriano scored to tie the match at 1-1. With 27:21 left, Morgan Ehlers scored to give the Pirates the lead for good at 2-1. With 9:12 left in the match, Alex Torres had the last shot of the match for the Hawks, but her shot went just wide of the frame. The loss extended the Hawks' winless streak to six.

Three players (Analissa Lopez, Santos and Alex Torres) had two shots apiece to lead the Hawks and Bella Cardenas had a match high three shots to lead the Pirates. Ibarra got the win for the Pirates and Shelby Hand got the loss for the Hawks. Cosumnes River outshot Modesto 7-5 and both teams had a foul apiece.

The Hawks will return home Friday as they will continue Big 8 Conference play against American River College in Sacramento. Kickoff is set for 4 pm.
