Hawks Declaw Panthers

SACRAMENTO (10-3) - Cosumnes River made the ten minute trip up Highway 99 to take on Sacramento City College in Big 8 Conference play. The Hawks used a pair of goals in each half to defeat the Panthers 4-1.

Both team lost their last match. The Hawks lost 3-0 to American River College on Friday in Sacramento while the Panthers lost 7-0 to San Joaquin Delta College on Friday in Stockton.

For the first nineteen and a half minutes of the first half, the two teams would play back and forth soccer. With 25:27 left in the first half, Brianna Heilman scored to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. With 4:02 left in the half, the Hawks scored on an Alexis Brown shot off a Katrina Vina pass to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. The Hawks led 2-0 at the halftime intermission.

In the second half, the Hawks would keep the offensive pressure on. With 37:42 left, Vina would score off an Amanda Lopez pass to extend the Hawks' lead to 3-0. Just over two minutes of clock time later, Brown would score again off a Vina pass to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead. The Panthers would get on the scoreboard off an own goal by the Hawks with 28:26 left. The win snapped the Hawks' seven match winless streak.

Vina had a match high five shots to lead the Hawks. Shelby Hand got the win for the Hawks and Fatima Sarmienta got the loss for the Panthers. Cosumnes River outshot Sacramento City 15-2 while the Hawks had one more corner kick (1-0) than did the Panthers.

The Hawks will have their next match next Tuesday as they host Sierra College in Big 8 Conference play in Sacramento. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm.
