Vikings Sail Past Hawks

SACRAMENTO (10-13) - Cosumnes River finished up their two match homestand as they took on Diablo Valley College. The Vikings used two first half goals to defeat the Hawks 3-1.

Today's match was a rematch of a match that was played on September 12th in Pleasant Hills that finished in a 1-1 draw. In their last match, the Hawks lost 3-0 to Sierra College on Tuesday in Sacramento while the Vikings tied Sierra 0-0 last Friday in Rocklin.

In the first half, the two teams would play back and forth soccer for the first twenty minutes of clock time. The Vikings would get on the scoreboard first. With 23:42 left in the half, Megan Melara scored to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. With 18:23 left in the half, Noelle Lemos scored after a blocked shot attempt by Erica MacDonald to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. The last chance for the Hawks to score came with 9:41 left, but Alex Torres' shot went just wide of the frame. The Vikings led 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, both teams played almost thirty minutes of back and forth soccer. With 17:19 left, Marjan Haydaree scored to extend the Vikings' lead to 3-0. In stoppage time, Alexis Brown would score to trim the Vikings' lead to 3-1. The loss marked the Hawks' second in a row.

Alex Torres had a match high three shots to lead the Hawks and Lemos and Melara also had a match high three shots to lead the Vikings. Rylie Pearson got the win for the Vikings and Shelby Hand got the loss for the Hawks. Diablo Valley outshot Cosumnes River 13-6 while the Vikings had two more corner kicks (2-0) than did the Hawks.

The Hawks have their next match scheduled for Tuesday as they take on Santa Rosa Junior College in Big 8 Conference play in Santa Rosa. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm.
