Hawks Sink Pirates to start off conference play

Sacramento, CA- The Cosumnes River College Hawks hosted the Modesto Junior College Pirates to start off conference play for the 2017 season. In three sets, the home Hawks defeated the visiting Pirates to start off the season with a victory.

In front of a large home crowd, Cosumnes River College matched its conference win total from last year. Last year, the Hawks defeated Modesto to take their lone conference win on the season in their last home game of the season. Fast forward one season, and the Hawks held of Modesto to start off conference play with a win.

Brandon Merritt, an assistant coach for the Hawks said, "It was great to see us start off the season on a strong note. We have put in a lot of work and it's great to see the results take place on the court. Hopefully we can use this victory as momentum for this season. We play in a good conference and we are glad for every win that we can take. We are eager to continue working and we can't wait to see what these girls can accomplish together as the season goes on."

Leading the team, Rebakkah McLauglin contributed 8 kills to pace the Hawk offense. Kelsey Brehm and Destanie Elliott both added 7 kills apiece to help shoulder the offensive attack. The Hawks defense combined for 64 total digs, led by Maya Young's 17 dig night.

Up Next- Cosumnes River College continues its homestand by hosting Folsom Lake College on Wednesday at 6:30. Both teams own a 1-0 record on the young season.
