Errors do in Beavers at home

American River College could not avoid the big inning at home on Thursday as they dropped a non-conference game to Cosumnes River College 8-2.  CRC jumped on Beaver starter Kirby Broadbent (Oakmont) in the first inning as 4 of the first 5 batters singled, with the other reaching on an error, a potential double play ball to Beaver 3B Colton Freeman (El Camino).  Broadbent settled down and threw up zeroes on the board until the 7th.  The Beavers pulled to within one in the 6th inning after leadoff hitter Cameron Bennett (Rio Linda) walked and stole second.  SS Steve Mercado (Antelope) then singled to advance Bennett to third.  RF Alex Gaskin (Jesuit) hit into a fielders choice to score Bennett.  After a groundout moved Gaskin to second, DH Dalton deVries (Oakmont) laced a first pitch single to right to score Gaskin.

The 7th inning however would end up doing in the Beavers.  After getting the first out of the inning Broadbent walked the 9 hitter in the lineup, the only batter who would get to 3 balls off of Broadbent all day.  A hit & run single put runners on the corners.  The next batter singled to put the Hawks up 4-2 and runners at 1st & 2nd.  CRC 1B Tyler Blake hit a sharp grounder to second where Bennett made the flip to SS Steve Mercado for the force, but Mercado's throw to first pulled 1B James Boitano (Argonaut) off the bag allowing the inning to continue.  After a hit batter loaded the bases Hawks RF Alex Fitchett singled to drive in two.  Another error by Freeman followed which ended up chasing Broadbent from the game.  Freshman Kyle Beardsley (Franklin) came on in relief and allowed a single to score the 5th and final run of the inning.

The Beavers go back on the road tomorrow to play Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill at 2:00 p.m.  BIG 8 Conference play begins Tuesday with the Beavers traveling to cross-town rival Sac City College for a 2:30 start.
