Hawks Return to the Field for Abbreviated Season

As the Consumes River College Hawks open their long-awaited 2021 season at American River College this Friday, there is a feeling of optimism throughout the program. Although this season will be shortened, playing just 21 games against only American River College, Folsom Lake College, and Sacramento City College, Coach Schroeder and her players are excited to get back on the field. Several returning players are looking to bounce back after a shortened season and some new faces are promised to contribute offensively, defensively, and on the mound.

Among the returning players, shortstop Leandra Coronado looks to lead the Hawks. Leandra was leading the team in most offensive statistics when the season was stopped last year. Coach Schroeder is "looking for her to lead the team this season and have a great year." Danielle Pfennig will be returning to the mound as well as covering first base, but Coach Schroeder is also hopeful that she can pick up where she left off last season at the plate. The Hawks are also going to be looking for Emilee Mort to take on a bit of a larger role this season, starting at either third base or in the outfield while contributing with her bat and speed. Kharizma Lathipanya is a player that Coach Schroeder wants to utilize on the base paths due to her speed. Another key to the Hawks lineup is Malia Villegas, who Coach Schroeder praises as a defensive specialist and a vocal leader in the dugout. Ryley Krum will be starting in the outfield and should add power to help the team offensively this season. Finally, the Hawks are hoping that Lexxy Thompson will be able to provide some power that she has developed in the offseason.

Some of the newcomers will also be asked to contribute in this shortened season. Ashlee Toy is a player that the Hawks are looking to fit into the lineup as a freshman to produce some offense as well as pitch and play first base. Catchers Maddie Moreno and Nicole Saravia will battle for catching time behind the plate. Coach Schroeder will also be shuffling freshmen Anissya Avendano, Seva Carter, Ramona Gonzales, and Tamisha McBride into lineups at different positions to find the best chemistry for the team.

Coach Schroeder's main goal this season is for the girls to, "have a good experience" as well as improve their skills and softball IQ for the next season and beyond, whether it is at CRC or at the next level. This shortened season and preseason has taken somewhat of a toll on the Hawks normal preparation, but they are excited to show thier improvement and compete with the their local Big 8 Conference opponents.
