Cosumnes River College and Sacramento City College faced off in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 5th at CRC. The matchup held extra meaning as it was CRC's Orange Out Game, played in honor of those who have battled or are currently battling leukemia. Players, coaches, and fans wore orange to show their support and raise awareness for the cause.
All proceeds from the gate and concessions were donated, and thanks to the generosity of the CRC community, the Hawks raised a total of $1,224—all of which will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
On the field, the two teams split the doubleheader. Sac City took game one with a 6-1 victory, tallying 9 hits and 5 earned runs while holding CRC to just 4 hits. The Panthers also capitalized on several defensive miscues by the Hawks.
In game two, CRC bounced back in a big way. With the game tied 1-1 through four innings, the Hawks exploded for five runs in the 5th to take control. Bella Harpster and Abigail Woodfill led the offensive surge, each going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ariana Fuentes added a double and an RBI, while Marissa Alders not only pitched a complete game but also drove in a run to help her own cause. Alders allowed only four hits and one earned run in a strong performance on the mound.
With the win, CRC claimed the series against the Panthers. The Hawks continue conference play at home this Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Folsom Lake College.
