Bear Cubs Top Hawks

SACRAMENTO (9-15) - Cosumnes River played their first Big 8 Conference match at home this afternoon as they took on Santa Rosa Junior College. The Bear Cubs would score two goals in each half and defeated the Hawks 4-1. 

Both teams earned a draw in their last match. The Hawks tied 1-1 with Diablo Valley College on Tuesday in Pleasant Hill while the Bear Cubs tied San Joaquin Delta 0-0.

In the first half, the Bear Cubs would score the opening goal of the match. With 30:16 left in the half, Jillian Van Riper scored to give the Bear Cubs a 1-0 lead. Van Riper would score again with 14:57 left in the half to give the Bear Cubs a 2-0 lead. Jessey Santos had a last shot of the half for the Hawks with 13:09 left but her shot was saved by Bailey Cahill of the Bear Cubs.

In the second half, the Bear Cubs would continue to extend their lead. Eden Brooker scored with 37:12 left to give the Bear Cubs a 3-0 lead. Annika Cerini would add the last tally of the day for the Bear Cubs with 28:21 left to give the Bear Cubs a 4-0 lead. The Hawks would get on the scoreboard on a Santos goal with 26:33 left trimming the Bear Cubs lead to 4-1. The loss extends the Hawks' winless streak to three.

Santos had two shots to lead the Hawks and Brooker and Van Riper both had a match high six shots to lead the Bear Cubs. Cahill got the win for Santa Rosa while Shelby Hand got the loss for the Hawks. Santa Rosa outshot Cosumnes River 26-4 and the Bear Cubs had five more corner kicks (5-0) than did Cosumnes River.

The Hawks will have their next match on Tuesday as they will continue Big 8 Conference play on the road against San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton. Kickoff is set for 5 pm.
