CRC Opens CCCAA Playoffs with a Sweep of Monterey Peninsula

In the opening round of the CCCAA State Softball Championships, the third-seeded Cosumnes River Hawks (CRC) swept visiting Monterey Peninsula College (MPC). CRC won the first game 8-0 on Thursday in five innings and won the second game Friday 7-4.

"It was nice to start the playoffs with a sweep. We had to shake off a few nerves, but once we got going, we played well, " Said head coach Kristy Schroeder.

In Thursday's opener, the Hawks broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth on three MPC errors. Sarah Babby and Malia Babasa both had two RBI in the inning and Eden Hobart drove in A.J. Dahdouh to put the Hawks up 5-0. Isabelle Vela's two-RBI double extended the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth, and Kalie Toy's sacrifice fly plated Vela for the decisive run. Tatiana Blas earned the win giving up only three hits and striking out four.

Friday's match-up was more of a back and forth affair. MPC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first and tacked on three more in the second due to two CRC errors. However, the Hawks started their comeback in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run inside the park home run by Babby. CRC added another in the fifth when Layla Towner's double drove in Brooke Hanson. The Hawks completed the comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Eden Hobart's single scored Toy and Avery Jolley. Abigail Woodfill and Brooke Hanson also had RBI singles pushing the lead to 7-4. Blas earned her second win of the weekend after coming on in relief in the second inning.

CRC will host Fresno City College on Friday 2:00 pm in the first game of Super Regionals.
