Even though the Bulldogs scored first in the first inning, it was a game you just knew the Hawks were going to break through. Both of the first two innings had the bases loaded on walks for the Hawks, unfortunately they couldn't break through.
The third inning made up for all of that as the Hawks scored four to take the lead. Brett Bloomfield (Davis) started it off by being hit by a pitch. With one out, Robert Daugherty (Pioneer) singled and Jordan Yu (Pleasant Grove) drove in Bloomfield with the Hawks first run. After another walk to Chris Loeb (Jesuit), Nicco Toni (Pleasant Grove) drove in Yu and Daugherty. Another walk to Daniel Enes (Rosemont) loaded the bases again for the fourth time in three innings before Devin Pettengill (Yuba City) drove in the final run of the inning for the Hawks with a sacrifice fly scoring Loeb.
San Mateo scored two runs in the fifth inning, the frame which saw Thomas Galart (Pioneer) enter in relief of Richardson who threw four innings and gave up three runs on three hits with three walks.
The bulldogs scored a single run in the sixth inning against Galart, the first he has allowed in his last 21 1/3 innings over 12 appearances which is a 0.42 ERA over that span. Galart picked up the win as he was the pitcher of record when the Hawks scored four runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Galart pitched five innings giving up five hits, one run with two walks and five strikeouts.
The seventh was the big inning for the Hawks as they regained the lead scoring three runs. After Brian Morley (Jesuit) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Yu walked, one of the Hawks 13 walks on the day. Loeb doubled in Morley and putting Yu on third. Toni drove in Yu with a sacrifice fly before Loeb scored on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning.
In the eighth the Hawks added an insurance run as Morley was hit by a pitch with two outs. After moving to second on a wild pitch and an intentional walk to Daugherty. Yu then had his second single driving in Morley with the Hawks final run.
In addition to Yu's two hits, Morley, Daugherty, Loeb, and Toni all had a hit apiece with Toni driving in three on the day. Daniel Enes line was interesting as he had four plate appearances with no official at bats with his sacrifice bunt and three walks on the day. In the two games so far he has one official at bat with two sacrifice bunts and three walks batting near the bottom of the lineup.
The deciding game will be a 12 noon start at Conway field in game three.
