SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Jaycob Velasco (Pleasant Valley HS/Chico, Calif.), a sophomore forward for the men’s basketball team, has been named CRC’s Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 1-7.  This is the second time Velasco has earned the honor.

Velasco, a 6’7” sophomore from Chico, led the Hawks to fifth place game at the 76th MJC tournament this past week.  In four games Velasco averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds per contest, and the Hawks went 3-1 during the tournament.  In the Hawks 82-70 defeat over Mendocino in the fifth place semifinal Velasco recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points while grabbing 10 rebounds, and going 2-2 from the free-throw line to help secure the victory.  He finished the tournament in the fifth place game with a 22 point performance, which included going 2-2 from the three-point range.  In CRC’s 80-76 5th place game win over Cuesta, Velasco also recorded 12 rebounds on top of his 22 points, giving him his consecutive double-double of the tournament.  He was named All-Tournament at the MJC tournament.

This is Jaycob Velasco’s second CRC Student-Athlete of the Week honor, as well as the third for the men’s basketball team this season.  Velasco and the rest of the Hawks are looking to keep up the team’s strong play as they prepare for the 1st Annual Lassen College Classic, which begins this Friday.  The Hawks (8-2) will tip-off the tournament against host Lassen College at 6 PM.  The tournament runs through Sunday, the 15th.
