Hawks Battle in A Difficult 1-0 Defeat

SACRAMENTO (9-8) - Cosumnes River College and the men's soccer program started its annual CCCAA NorCal Showcase on Friday as the Hawks played host to Hartnell College.

The Hawks went into Friday's match with high belief and spirit after their 6-0 victory at Monterey Peninsula College. From the opening whistle, they picked up right where they left off by dominating possession and outshooting the Panthers 8-4 in the first half. Backup freshman goalkeeper Alecxis Jacobo continued to grow in confidence after making his first start of the year in the win by making three key saves to keep the game 0-0 at halftime.

The second half was just more of the same as the Hawks continued to dominate possession and create scoring opportunities, but not being able to find the back of the net. In the 84th minute, an innocuous ball played into the middle of the field was picked off by Brandon Hernandez of the Panters causing a 3v4 counter attack leading to the only goal of the game and delivering the Hawks their second loss of the season.

Coach Preble was very happy with their play but rued the missed chances, "I thought the boys played as well or better than they did in Monterey. The only difference is we scored six there and zero here and at this level, chances don't come easy and I feel we created enough chances to score and win but sometimes things don't go out how there are supposed to."

Next for the Hawks is CCCAA #10 De Anza College on Sunday at 11 am to close the CCCAA NorCal Showcase.
