Hawks Sweep ARC to Open Conference Play

The Cosumnes River Hawks opened the Big 8 Conference season with a double header sweep of American River College, 5-0 and 6-0, on Saturday. Pitchers Ashlee Toy and Danielle Pfenning both threw shutouts to lead the way for the Hawks.

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in game one when Mary Baccay's sacrifice fly scored Leandra Coronado in the first.  Coronado scored another in the third on Victoria Ochoa's RBI single. Ochoa scored in the sixth inning pushing the lead to 3-0, and Toy's two run homer in the seventh sealed it for CRC. Offensively, Coronado led the team going 4-4.

It was more of the same in game two. The Hawks scored two runs in the second inning and then exploded for four runs in the fourth. Amaya Pantega led the Hawks going 3-3 with 2 RBI. Coronado scored twice, and Toy was 3-4 with a double.

"It was a great day for us. Ashlee and Danielle pitched really well," commented head coach Kristy Schroeder. "Leandra was hot at the plate all day, and Ashlee had a huge tomahawk home run for us in game one. I was also really happy with the way Amaya hit in game two."

CRC returns to action on Tuesday, March 1 at 3:00 when they host Santa Rosa.
