Hawks Complete Dramatic Comeback for Sweep over Sac City

The ninth-ranked Cosumnes River Hawks (CRC) maintained their share of first place in the Big 8 Conference with a dramatic doubleheader sweep of Sacramento City College on Saturday at CRC Softball Field. The Hawks rode another stellar pitching performance from Ashlee Toy to a 1-0 win in game one and scored three runs in the final inning of game two to overcome a two-run deficit.

"It was an exciting day!" expressed head coach Kristy Schroeder. "Once again Ashlee pitched great and kept them scoreless, and we had some good defensive plays behind her. In game two, we had a great comeback. The team never gave up and kept the intensity high the entire game."

Tori Ochoa drove in Leandra Coronado in the first inning giving the Hawks the only run they would need. Toy held Sac City to four hits and no runs, striking out seven.  It was Toy's ninth shutout of the year. She leads the Big 8 in ERA, strikeouts, and wins.

In game two, Sac City jumped out a quick 2-0 lead in the first. The Jaguars tacked on three in the top of the fifth inning, but CRC responded the bottom of the fifth with three runs, cutting the lead to 5-3. That score remained until the bottom of the seventh when Tamisha McBride singled to start the rally and Coronado reached on an error. McBride scored on a single by Mary Bacay and Toy drove in Coronado to tie the score at 5-5. Ochoa posted her second game winning hit of the day when her single up the middle plated Bacay for the 6-5 win.

"Tori was hitting the ball well all day, and Tamisha had a great day.  She had two RBIs in the fifth and got us going in the seventh.  She also had a great catch in the outfield that kept a run from scoring," added Schroeder.

The Hawks play at Folsom Lake College on Tuesday and host Delta College in a doubleheader on Saturday.
