Hawks Drop Two in Highly Ranked Match-ups

In a triple-header featuring of three of the top 14 teams in the CCCAA rankings, seventh-ranked Cosumnes River College (CRC) fell short today in a pair of non-conference games. The Hawks lost a back and forth battle to third-ranked College of San Mateo 6-4 in the early game and fell 5-2 to 14th-ranked Fresno City College in the final.

"It was a tough day. We got out a good start against San Mateo, but let them back in it," commented head coach Kristy Schroeder. "Fresno did the same thing to us, but we couldn't overcome that early deficit. However, playing good teams like that will prepare us for the post-season."

Against San Mateo, CRC jumped out to an early 4-0 lead sparked by Nicole Saravia's two RBI single. Ashlee Toy, Mary Baccay, Danielle Pfenning, and Tori Ochoa all scored in the inning. However, the Bulldogs bounced back to score five runs in the top of the fifth and never looked back.

Fresno posted an early 3-0 lead in game two, but CRC tightened it up with two runs in the bottom of the first. Fresno tacked on a pair of runs in the second and held the Hawks scoreless the rest of the way. CRC managed only three hits versus Fresno, with the only runs of the game coming on an RBI double by Pfenning.

San Mateo beat Fresno 8-1 in the other game of the day.
