Second Quarter Pushes Falcons Past Hawks in Conference Opener

SACRAMENTO (12-22) – Cosumnes River played their first Big 8 Conference game of the season as they took on Folsom Lake College in Sacramento. The Hawks were outscored by twelve in the second quarter and fell 64-42 to the visiting Falcons.

In the first quarter, the Hawks started the game on a 5-1 spurt, capped by a pair of Malia Clark free throws with 8:10 left in the quarter. The four point lead was the largest of the ballgame for the Hawks. The Falcons would then go on a 10-4 run, capped by an Amani Britton layup with 3:08 left in the quarter, to take the lead for good at 11-9. The Falcons led 22-14 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hawks would come as close as eight on two occasions; the second occasion at 24-16 on a Kandace Sans jumper with 8:54 left in the half. The Falcons would then go on an 11-0 run, capped by a Donya Khonsari three pointer with 4:31 left in the half, to extend their lead to 35-16. The Falcons led 38-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Falcons would hold the Hawks at arms' length. The Falcons would gain their largest lead of the quarter at twenty-one, at 46-25, on a Macie Purbaugh layup with 6:41 left in the quarter. The Hawks would then go on a 8-0 run, capped by a Chelsea Shirley-Ohashi layup with 4:13 left in the quarter, to trim the Falcons' lead to 46-33. The Falcons led 48-35 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Falcons would extend their lead again. The Hawks would get as close as nine, at 49-40, on a Briley Jordet three pointer with 8:24 left. The Falcons would go on a 14-0 run, capped by a Megan Williams layup with 2:59 left, to gain their largest lead of the ballgame at twenty-three at 63-40.

Shirley-Ohashi had a double-double with a game high sixteen points and fourteen rebounds for the Hawks. Jasmine Hess had fourteen points, off the bench, for the Falcons.

The Hawks shot 24.6% (15-61) from the field, 15% (3-20) from the three-point line and were 69.2% (9-13) from the free throw line. The Falcons shot 34.9% (22-63) from the field, 37% (10-27) from the three-point line and 50% (10-20) from the foul line. Cosumnes River's defense forced twenty-five Falcon turnovers while the Falcons' defense forced thirty turnovers. Folsom Lake outrebounded Cosumnes River 48-44 and the Falcons had thirteen more points off the bench (24-11) than did the Hawks.

The next game for the Hawks will be Tuesday as they continue Big 8 Conference play against Diablo Valley College in San Pablo. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm
