Hawks Gain First Win of Season over Vikings

SACRAMENTO (1-25) – Cosumnes River finished up their two game road trip as they took on Diablo Valley College in Sacramento. The Hawks outscored the Vikings by eighteen in the second quarter en route to a 66-38 victory.

In the first quarter, the Hawks would start the game on a 9-2 run capped by a Briley Jordet layup with 6:34 left in the quarter. The Vikings would come as close as three, at 11-8, on a Junn Bloom layup with 1:48 left in the quarter. The Hawks led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hawks would expand their lead. The Hawks would go on an 8-4 spurt, capped by a Chelsea Shirley-Oshashi layup, to give the Hawks a double digit lead at 22-12 with 5:40 left in the half. The Hawks gained their largest lead of the half at twenty-four, at 37-13, on a Jordet three pointer with no time remaining.

In the third quarter, the Hawks would hold the Vikings at arms' length. The Hawks would gain their largest lead of the quarter at thirty-two, at 49-17, on a Shirley-Ohashi layup with 1:57 left in the quarter. The Hawks led 49-19 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Hawks would continue to expand their lead. The Hawks would gain their largest lead of the ballgame on two occasions; the second occasion at 66-33 on a Mekkah Pharr layup with 2:23 left.

Shirley-Ohashi had a double double with fourteen points and thirteen rebounds for the Hawks. Chaunice Carr had a game high twenty-one points for the Vikings. Jordan had eleven and Malia Clark had ten in the victory.

The Hawks shot 36.1% (26-72) from the field, 30.8% (8-26) from the three-point line and were 66.7% (6-9) from the free throw line. The Vikings shot 25.9% (14-54) from the field, 20% (2-10) from the three-point line and 57.1% (8-14) from the foul line. Cosumnes River's defense forced thirty-one Viking turnovers while the Vikings' defense forced twenty-one turnovers. Cosumnes River outrebounded Diablo Valley 46-41 and the Hawks had thirteen more points off turnovers (26-13) than did the Vikings.

The next game for the Hawks will be Friday as they continue Big 8 Conference play against Modesto Junior College in Modesto. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm
