CRC OPENS SOLANO SHOWDOWN TONIGHT VS SHASTA

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Head Coach Coral Sage and her team return to action this week following a two-week hiatus.  The Hawks will look to extend their current winning streak to eight games this afternoon when they tip-off in the Solano Showdown tonight against Shasta College of Redding.

Cosumnes River begins the season win an impressive 7-1 mark, having won seven straight following their opening round loss in the Jocelyn Mancebo Classic on opening night at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.  The Hawks eventually took the consolation championship in that event before taking the championship in their own tournament, the CRC Invitational last month.  CRC will look to extend their winning streak in the opening round of the tournament at Solano College tonight at 6 PM, when they take on Shasta.

The Hawks are led by sophomore forward Janie Myles.  Myles, a 5'11" Chicago native, leads the Hawks with 23.1 points and 13 rebounds per contest.  Sophomore combo guard Jade Sowell-Hundon (pictured right), the Hawks leading scorer from last season, is also averaging over 23 points per contest for CRC through the team's first eight games.  Freshman guard Sakara Brewer is also among the Hawks offensive leaders, at nearly 10 points per game.

CRC will take on a talented Shasta team that opens the year 5-4.  Shasta began the season strong, taking the consolation championship in the CRC Invitational earlier in the year.  However, the team as scuffled of late, dropping three of their last five contests.  The team is led by freshman post Merrit Schoenhofer, currently averaging 10.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game in her debut season for Shasta.  Schoenhofer, a 6'1" native of Fortuna, opened the season with a 10 point-20 rebound performance against Napa Valley in her collegiate debut.

The Solano Showdown, which Solano College debuted back in 1995, is scheduled to run through Sunday.  Also competing in the event will be host Solano, Chabot, Los Medanos, De Anza, and Big 8 conference foes Diablo Valley and Sacramento City.
